Today's POP is Jodie in Rome, seeing rainbows and British post-war painters…
It seems crazy that while in Rome I went to see a show by Howard Hodgkin. But the truth is I'd stop in any country for a Turner Prize winner…
'New Paintings' at Gagosian's space on Via Francesco Crispi have a unique vibrancy now etched in my brain. In the great white midst of the gallery space, Hodgkin’s jade green, tangelo and canary yellow strokes/blotches jump right out at you from off the wall, riotous and seemingly impulsive.
Although, contrary to my vision of the artist rigorously blobbing and streaming paint across each canvas in a five-minute fury, it turns out each piece was a messy birth, taking 2-3 years to complete. Get out of town Howard Hodgkin.
'I don't think you can lightly paint a picture. It's an activity I take very seriously.'
Howard Hodgkin New Paintings is on at Gagosian Gallery, Rome until 4 May
