Today's POP is Ashley in NY… Balenciaga post-NG.
New York City in early January. Picasso's on show in black and white and Balenciaga in all natural fabrics. Not such a bad old world…
While Balenciaga's select Downtown showroom presentation today didn't unveil the first work of Alexander Wang, it did show clear signs that life after the great Nicolas Ghesquiere can still be great for the legendary house of Cristobal Balenciaga.
The Balenciaga studio revisited ideas from the last Ghesquiere runway show, from the house's illustrious past and threw in a heap of refined contemporary moods to boot. There wasn't a synthetic fabric in sight.
What became immediately clear to the assembled cogniscenti was that Cristobal Balenciaga offered more than enough magical blueprints for more than a couple of design successors. A show in natural fabrics? Not a problem when the house's founder invented at least a couple of those on show.
Whether Wang will build on this moment is open to debate. But let's hope so. The world needs more of this. Here was a very important Parisian fashion house showing some very beautiful, sophisticated clothes for the modern-thinking woman.
