Today's POP is OBLIVION… 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… oh let's just go snog in the car park…
It was the song that soundtracked 1,000 fashion shows in 2012, and even though it was first playing on the office stereo at the tail end of 2011, today we celebrate "Oblivion".
Why celebrate? Well, as Grimes' live shows became bigger and more abandoned this year it was always this song that was the wild highlight. Nobody seemed to mention that the production was more The Knife than even a twisted Fever Ray b-side, but in the POP fashion cupboard everyone had a different take on why the lyric seemed just right… It's about helter skelter nights, about never settling down in a transient existence, about London and the threat of random hurt…
It was the song that ended most long days at POP. Wonderfully open to interpretation, today it becomes a song about drinking too much in a perfect way on New Year's Eve.
Grimes is 100 per cent POP girl. Check the video again and her carefree spirit while surrounded by cartoonish masculinity.
"Art gives me an outlet where I can be aggressive in a world where I can't usually be," she memorably told Pitchfork. "And part of it was asserting this abstract female power in these male-dominated arenas."
