Luxury quality with a vintage aesthetic is the premise of Dita Eyewear. Hailing from Cali, Jeff and John are the masterminds behind the brand which kicked off in 1995. Now they've got an extended list of celeb clients and collaborations with brands like Undercover and Hysteric Glamour under their belt. POP got in a quick 5 with J&J. We're thinking we're gonna need some new shades to protect us from the blinding effect of the recent snow…
How did you get started designing eyewear?
Eyewear defines a person's character; it's the first thing you see when interacting with someone. For this reason, we've always considered eyewear to be the quintessential accessory that really pulls together a look and sets a person's overall style. We wanted to design luxury eyewear for an impactful first impression.
What has been your inspiration for the upcoming Spring/Summer season?
This season is a synergy of design and function. We've produced the best quality in classic, subtle yet luxurious eyewear staples for the smart spender. With the recession, most people can only invest in 1 or 2 quality frames as opposed to multiple styles as the notion of disposable incomes have become increasingly scarce. It was important for us to give as much attention to detail in each style for SS12 and create true investment pieces for our style savvy customer.

What is your favourite decade or period (in terms of fashion and/or eyewear styles)?
The 1960's to 1970's were a time when measures of extremes were provoked in terms of style. During this time, eyewear was produced in W. Germany and there were bold colors and an abundance of interesting shapes and high standards of quality were taken to the next level. This era was game changing. We're also inspired by men's fashion from this period – the suits, hats and accessories.
Do you have a favourite cinematic 'eyewear moment'?
Easy Rider is an all-time favorite – Eyewear defined Peter Fonda's character. As a brand, the most pivotal cinematic moment for us in particular was when the film K-Pax starring Kevin Spacey came out. They incorporated Dita Eyewear into the movie and in all promotional materials. That was a big break for us.
Who would you absolutely love to see wearing your sunglasses?
We would love to see Steve McQueen in Blackbird, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn in Vesoul and Bona Fida, Frank Sinatra in Mach-One, Dean Martin in Mach-Two, and Bridget Bardot in Bluebird in the '60's. Right now we're fortunate enough to be worn by almost every icon of today.
