BLEACH is the fun, new Dalston-born

38

hair salon with a twist! Offering up 'Virgin to Dip Dyes', 'Super cool colour' to 'Bleachenders', and even colored stencils of your choice. These guys know what the kids want, and they know how they want it!

BLEACH began putting the rainbow hues into Hackney life when they opened up as a concession in WAH Nails last year. The Grunge-boutique salon has been in such high demand that they have already expanded into TOPSHOP on Oxford street (using exclusively TIGI color and styling products) And they are about to go stateside too…

We're such a Fan of them at POP and Homme+  that we asked Alex Brownsell, (the Creative director of the brand) to give us a double-dye dosage for THEPOP.COM- Both a Shoot and an interview! Styled by our own John Colver and shot by Alex Sainsbury.

What is Bleach?

Bleach is a small salon in Dalston shared with WAH nails at 420 Kingsland road e8 4aa. We also have a 2 chair concession in the basement of Topshop in Oxford Circus. Check out our blog to see what we do www.bleachlondon.co.uk.

Where did the concept for Bleach come from?

Bleach began in my kitchen about 3 years ago. Back then I washed people's colors off over the bath. I used to get everyone round at the same time and make them all help out, it was really fun. Its still like this now most evenings in Dalston.

What is your background and how did you start out?

I started hairdressing in my mums salon when i was 12. Then I used to just sweep the floor and make tea. At 16 I moved to London to train properly, a few years later I stopped working in salons all together and concentrated on session work (styling for photo-shoots and music videos). Then last September when I was 23 we opened Bleach. I think because I have been out of the salon environment for so many years Bleach has a different feel to a normal salon; its very chilled out and fun, the lights are a bit dimmer and the music's a bit louder.  It feels way more comfortable for people than sitting in a stark bright salon, gawping at their reflection.

Who's hair would be your dream job?

I would love to have done Kurt Cobains hair in 1991, or Gwen Stefanni in the early 2000s .

If 'the Rachel' was the most requested hair style of the nineties, What is it for today’s girl?

The most requested hairstyle we have at bleach is the Dip Dye, its amazing how many people are willing to go for this grown out grungy bleached look. I think its really cool, loads of girls who want to be blonde but have never dared before have it done. It's way less of a commitment that going the full way.

What's in store for the future of the  'Bleach' brand?

Bleach will be opening in New York from September, and we will be expanding our service menus and making a hair zine.
