Todays POP is Louby…   A Shimmer of possibility.

Today I went to check out the

19

Paul Graham Exhibition at the

16

Whitechapel Gallery. I was really excited, as Paul Graham is definitely one of my fave photographers! This retrospective of Graham’s work begins with a look into his portrayal of the 1980’s Thatcher days during the original British recession.

His honest work takes us through northern England and London capturing fleeting moments of beauty in a time of mass unemployment and misery.
To my delight the exhibition continued, to reveal his journey from 2004 – 2006.  During this period Graham traveled across America with his camera exposing some of the most unfortunate parts of the country in a series of books entitled ‘A Shimmer of Possibility’; based on Chechov’s short stories.

His capacity to depict both the American dream and the American Nightmare wtihin the same image marks him as a one of a kind image-maker.While I love his earlier English snaps, for me, I feel  as though he was born to shoot American life.
I would recommend this exhibition to anyone.
