Today's POP is RECORD OF THE YEAR.

21

Last year we championed XX and the world sharply followed… This year we put Britney on our cover but quietly lost our hearts to "Gold" by Darkstar, released by Kode 9 on his excellent Hyperdub label.

"Gold" is not the huge Spandau Ballet song. Better, it's the Human League b-side that no-one's heard of… That's all changed now, with the Darkstar album currently a quiet storm in all discerning studios and work spaces.

Just as good as "Gold" (geddit) is the track "Aidy's Girl Is A Computer", which the infamous FACE writer Ian Penman singled out as his highlight. That's because "Aidy's…" sounds more Kraftwerky and old-school for the grown-ups…

At POP's grand new offices on Mayfair's Hanover Square, we mostly made shapes to a compilation of "Under One Roof", "Gold" and "North". It all sounded very Mute/Factory and very right… Especially played alongside Factory Floor, a new band produced by New Order's Stephen Morris.

That new Take That album kind of worked in the mix too. POP!
