POP 454 Thursday 18 November 2010
Today's POP is Alex, he's got 99 problems but a collector's box ain't one.

Back in 2003 he said it. That was it. Mr Carter had called it a day, but we didn’t quite believe that, did we? Truth is he was gone for only three years. In 2006 he came back, and gave us a few of the best rap albums of the decade.
The Jigga has just released The Hits Collection Volume One, packed with a few of his all time anthems as well as his modern classics. The hits collection can also be purchased as a collector’s box, which includes autographed Aviator headphones, a double cd with rarities and never before released stuff and a photo book.
As if that wasn’t enough, the self-called 'New Sinatra' has also released his long awaited book Decoded, in which he takes the reader through his works and life, decoding every aspect of his lyrics and helping us to understand a bit more about his rhymes.
Arguably the best rapper alive, Jay-Z has a extraordinary talent and flair when it comes to lyrics, no one flows like he does, always smooth and swaggy. The book might miss the point a bit though, I don’t see the need to explain and clarify the lyrics, when acutally that is the beauty and appeal of rap, that it challenges you to understand the why, where, and when of those encrypted rhymes. However, Shawn has proved again to have a real instinct when it comes to business, as I am sure his two later releases will be topping the charts this Christmas.
Info: Decoded is out today on Virgin books; The Hits Collection is out now.
