I took some time to catch up with Word To Mother who's kicking back at FAME in Italy.

POP: I hear you are at

FAME. Can you tell me a bit about it and your involvement there?
WTM: Fame is an art event hosted by a crazed pasta eating lunatic by the name of Angelo Milano. He invites artists from around the world to make art on walls in his home town in southern Italy. The food is fantastic, the weather is great and there are plenty of walls to paint. I've been painting some large scale MOTHER pieces using my signature type. I paint the outside of the letters so that the inside leaves the texture of the walls underneath. The walls out here are perfect for it as they are so textured and have a beautiful history. The local people seem to love the new art thats appearing all over town which makes it even better. I worked on a huge rooftop piece yesterday and the retired couple that lived in the house sat and watched me paint for eight hours. I can't speak any Italian and they couln't speak any English but somehow we were still able to communicate. They made sure I had everything I needed which was really touching.

POP: Tell me about the new work you are making.
WTM: As well as working on some large letter pieces out here in Italy, I am producing a print with Angelo and Studio Cromie and an installation for the final FAME show in September. When I get back to London I'll be getting back to producing work for my upcoming London Solo show at

42

StolenSpace in October. It will feature pieces painted on salvaged wood and metal which is something I have been doing for a while now. The whole idea of the show is going to be based around the idea of the lies and deceit that is thrown at us every day behind the veil of popular culture.

POP: When did you start making work and who are your contemporaries?
WTM: I've always made artwork of some sort for as long as I can remember. I still draw every day and paint walls when the weather is nice.
I'm not sure what the last part of that question means… I was influenced growing up by artwork that my mum showed me, everything from Aubrey Beardsley to Dr Seuss. A strange but beautiful combination.

POP: What are you doing for the rest of Summer 2010?
WTM: I'm enjoying the rest of my week out here in Italy and then I'm going to be locking myself in my studio until October. I am sure that I will be forced to take my lady friend out in between but I will try and avoid it at all costs.
