Today's POP is Olga. She’s part of the posse that POP sent to the Chris Cunningham event. The rest of us are all very jealous. Ah well…
I went to the Chris Cunningham show at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday night after a 72 hour schlep across Europe from Madrid due to that pesky ash fest! What an experience! Amost an hour long show featuring live mixed videos and music splashing out onto three screens. The performance's start being sparked by the video project/collaboration with the incredible Grace Jones. Deep, dark and dirty sound and dreamlike exposure of the almost anatomical movements forces you deep inside the heart of Cunningham's vision, with a fascination of Grace Jones's amazing power for expression. It was followed by remix of Cunningham's famous Flex, a piece from the video installation for the exhibition 'the Apocalypse: Beauty and Horror in Contemporary Art' . Cunningham set to create the abstract videos with scenes of human flesh in sublime light, with lots of fighting, blood, heavy breathing, somefucking, spunk and God! So cinematic and creepy – sounding! His works like a horror dream of devil's aesthetics with real music and sound that blew me away. There were few mixes with scenes from his commercial works, like the Mental.
Wealth for Sony PlayStation and Quiet, for Telecom Italia… all finished with the very touching new remix "New York is killing me", one of the songs he worked on for Gil Scott-Heron's album, I'm new here…great show, I would have stayed for more of his revealing imagination… for what was announced at the beginning of the show ,that some serious staff just about to appear and those, who do not prepared. Run now!
