POP 258 Easter Weekend, 2-5 April 2010

Today's POP is David. He's spending his Easter weekend working. So have an egg on him. Or a hot cross bun as they do here in the UK.

If you happen to be headed to Milan for the Salone Del Mobile – apart from visiting the fair itself (and all the parties of course), be sure to pop in to Bottega Veneta's headquarter on Via Privata Ercole Marelli. Don't worry, it's not as private as the name makes it out to be, rather public actually, as they are putting on a rather rare pop-up store featuring unique and specially designed travel items.

The store is the brainchild of Bottega's Creative Director, Tomas Maier (who designed some special Bottega pieces just for this occasion) and the editor-in-chief of the Japanese design magazine Casa Bruto: Seiichi Kamei. The focus of the store will Japanese design, especially from a craftsmanship, tradition and functionality perspective.

The objects include hand-cut Edo Kiriko glasses from a third-generation craftsman Yasunori Kimura for Taburo Corporation; hand-cut Shippo Kiriko glasses from the Tokyo-based atelier Glass Forest; Akita cedar wood pitchers by renowned artisan Yasutaka Shimizu; a wine opener by Mitsunobu Ogino of the Niigata Prefecture design studio Hyakunen-Monogatari (Tales of a Century); and a box featuring Hakone Yosegi-Zaiku, a traditional Japanese marquetry technique, by the award-winning craftsman Katsuhiro Kanazashi. Included in the selection will be four handbags and several small leather goods from Bottega Veneta, all designed exclusively and in limited edition for the event.

This pop-up store is apparently just on part of a week-long ode to Japanese design. Bottega Veneta not only sponsored a competition for the design students at the Tokyo University whose winners will be showcased during Salone, but will also hold a special Japanese tea ceremony to complete proceedings.

Good on them!
