Today’s Pop is Paul. He’s been part of our team so long we’ve almost forgot how to sing his praises. Well, choir sing!

Swiss smiles

Pop admires a good fashion competition. Have you noticed how many have been cropping up this decade. One of the most significant is the Swiss Textiles Award. Whilst Team Ashley, etc; were whooping it up in La La Land, Cinderella here went to the ball in Zurich. Plenty of the usual Euro fashion cognoscenti – Diane Pernet, et al. Plus, new companions for the week, Imran Amed of the redoubtable

Swiss Textiles Award was in celebratory mood – it is their 10th anniversary, after all. And all of the previous winners have seen their business grow after the generous €100,000 prize. A year after Raf Simons won, in 2003, he was appointed Creative Director to Jil Sander. Marios Schwab went on to similar at Halston. Last year, Rodarte well deserved their prize. These and more, including Haider Ackermann, Christian Wijnants, Benoit Missolin – all returned for a lively discussion on the nature of the industry during the afternoon round table discussion. Raf demonstrated true colours as an agent provocateur, whilst Haider displayed his Latin American roots, turning any negative into a positive. It was fun.

This year saw a strong competition with Alexis Mabille (France), Erdem and Peter Pilotto (UK), and three from New York: Ohne Titel, Thakoon and Alexander Wang.
Pop will discreetly eschew comment on the choice of winner. It seemed unwarranted when others would have clearly benefitted from such a substantial award. Ohne Titel and Peter Pilotto, in particular, demonstrated impressive talent that was ready for advancement. Was this a strategic tactic to leverage the award into the larger fashion community as some journalists believed. Did it really follow the same route as this year’s Jedward debacle on X Factor?
Pop wants to be kind. Swiss Textiles Award may have taken a wrong turning this year. Next year better!
