Today’s pop is Malena. As well as being a beautiful girl from Argentina, Malena knows her art like nobodys business. She predicted POP up spaces to be huge in 2009. Yup. Right again.

(The funny thing about this pic is that the guy to the right, next to Olympia Scarry, is Chris Eubank, famed boxer and

anti-war evangelist. Why he was there, no one knows.)

The POP team piled down in force to see Olympia Scarry’s newest installation at 50 Upper Brooke St. In the goup exhibition

19

Play.

PLAY ‘pop-up’ group show organised by Paradise Row and Prakke Contemporary gathers an incredible number of artists who have transformed a serious building into a playground. The exhibition comes complete with a performance schedule to make your knees weak.

If you were drained by the amount of events and exhibitions you were exposed to during Frieze week and needed to find commercial escapism then we hope you made sure to visit this exhibition. We made our way to the show on Thursday after work, feeling drained and taciturn. As we walked past the American embassy we saw a grand building where the silhouettes of Gary Webb and Conrad Shawcross’s work looked like a party was going on inside. Rumour has it that the house in which the exhibition resides belongs to a large collector, and being under refurbishment, he kindly let artists run riot throughout.

The result is a playful, optimistic and refreshing kind of carnage. What did we see? A monopoly game in a vast and elegant room, Jake and Dinos Chapman’s stuffed animals on a see saw, and our own smiley faces reflected on Jeppe Hein’s mirror made us feel like Alice in Wonderland walking inside a funhouse.

Of course Olympia Scarry’s installation ruled supreme. A room filled with feathers, we were invited to come and play –like children – throwing feathers at each other, rolling in them, forgetting the world and getitng back to that primal state of euphoria that is so often lost during the pressure and serious nature of Frieze week . Its like the aftermath of a giant pillow fight that you are invited to join and keep the flight alive.

Were betting this will be one of the most talked about shows during Frieze!
