POP 120 Tuesday, 6 October 2009

Today’s Pop is Becky. Becky is short for Rebecca, and our favourite Rebecca is the Daphne du Maurier novel of the same name. Actually, even more so, the Hitchcock adaptation from 1940. It won two Oscars.

So 2009 is the year of the POP up space it seems . Restaurants, Boutiques, art galleries, the credit crunch has brought a whole new lease of creativity to companies and artists alike.

Last week I went to visit

44

John Jones frame makers (the best place in London for high quality and museum framing) and I discovered they have set up a pop up space within their building , working with young artists – not only supporting their work but doing a bloody brilliant frame job. A true gem!

They gave me a sneak peek of their new show. Sarah Kate Wilson is an emerging British abstract painter who has been the John Jones artist in residence since August 2009. Throughout her residency she has created ‘Lunar Rainbow’, a nonsensical world where frivolity and flirtation are at play transforming the project space gallery into an interactive painted environment. Walkways guide the viewer into the space where swings replace conventional viewing and seating platforms and works are observed whilst wading through a ball pool.
The show opens on the 9th of October. Be there.

To accompany this playful exhibition the Laurel Collective will be performing, and the Two Blind Pigs will be making glittery, popping candy cocktails! That sounds very POP to me!

Private View 9th October 6 – 10pm
Exhibition 12th October – 13th November
