SETTING/
Fur trade was an integral part of the early history of first contact in the New World. During the 16th century European sailors and fisherman began trading with the native people for their pelts. These furs were called castor gras in French, or "coat beaver" in English.
Fur trade soon became an incentive for the deeper explorative penetration of the American continent and in turn played a vital political role in the establishment of a European presence in the New World.
